South Texas College (STC) is a public community college in the Rio Grande Valley region of South Texas, and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelor of Applied Technology, Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees. STC has an enrollment of approximately 31,000 students and a staff of 1,600 working across six campuses. It was created on September 1, 1993 with the passage of Texas Senate Bill 251, the purpose of which was to serve Hidalgo and Starr County.

The college is well known in higher education circles for its diverse student body and for operating one of the largest dual enrollment/early college high school programs in the United States.

As defined by the Texas Legislature, the official service area of STC includes all of Hidalgo and Starr Counties.

About the faculty

South Texas College currently employs 428 full-time and 228 adjunct instructors. There are 384 faculty members with master's degrees, 46 hold double master's, five hold triple master's and 79 have doctorate degrees. In certificate and other programs, there are 97 faculty members holding bachelor degrees and 44 with associate degrees.

Vital statistics

Associate degrees and certificates

South Texas College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelor of Applied Technology, Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees and certificates. More than 31,000 students attend STC and a faculty and staff of more than 1,600 serve STC's five campuses.

The college offers more than 100 degree and certificate program options, including associate degrees in a variety of art, science, technology and allied health fields of study. The college also offers twenty online degree and certificate options.

Bachelor of Applied Technology

STC offers a Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) degree in Technology Management, as well as a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Computer and Information Technologies and a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Organizational Leadership. The college is one of only three Texas community colleges accredited to offer a BAT or BAS degree and the only community college in Texas accredited to offer three bachelor's degrees.

Dual enrollment opportunities

STC has instituted a variety of dual enrollment programs, including early college high schools, drop-out recovery programs and other unique initiatives with high schools throughout Hidalgo and Starr counties. The programs allow eligible students to take college courses while attending high school. Combined, more than 11,000 students are currently enrolled in these programs.

The college has also developed two intensive academic programs for students interested in pursuing degrees in the medical and engineering fields. The Dual Enrollment Medical Science Academy and the Dual Enrollment Engineering Academy consist of concentrated two-year programs of study and internship opportunities for qualified students to pursue an Associate of Science degree during their junior and senior years in high school.

Business and industry training

STC's Partnership for Business and Industry Training offers employers customized training that will upgrade the skills of current employees and prepare new employees for a variety of industries.

Continuing and professional education

The program provides opportunities for lifelong learners to upgrade their skills, change careers or seek personal enrichment.

NAAMREI

The college is the fiscal agent and home of the executive offices for the North American Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education Initiative. STC serves as the Regional Institute for Advanced Manufacturing linked to all the community and technical colleges in the region. The college has taken the lead in helping train the workers to fuel a regional manufacturing economy and to support innovations in rapid response manufacturing.

Leadership development

South Texas College currently runs a leadership development program with students engaging the community and the students with service learning, and action learning projects- Partner organizations in the surrounding community allow STC Students and student groups to engage in positive change projects, and volunteer to support existing projects to create a better Rio Grande Valley
